Mayor Jenny Wilson: Save the Hall

Salt Lake City officials, including Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, are advocating for the preservation of Abravanel Hall amid plans for a new downtown sports, entertainment, culture, and convention district. Mayor Wilson emphasized the importance of keeping Abravanel Hall in its current form, valuing community feedback. While the future of the hall and the entertainment district remains uncertain, the Smith Entertainment Group has proposed a lease for nearby blocks to develop retail, restaurants, and residential units. Despite these developments, there is strong community support for preserving Abravanel Hall, evidenced by an online petition garnering over 33,000 signatures in two weeks. Conversations about the district are still in the early stages, with a commitment to maintaining a world-class concert hall for the Utah Symphony and the city.

Our Take: We believe Jenny Wilson is hearing our voices and we are encouraged she is pivoting from early positions. However, it’s important to keep reminding Mayor Wilson that we advocate for preserving Abravanel Hall and its plaza for future generations.
